From ballroom dancing to event production? Really?
Yes! It’s not as bizarre a transition as it might seem. I was a professional ballroom & Latin dancer for nine years before coming to Contemporary. Aside from teaching & competing, I produced dance competitions and showcases all over Southern California, with the kind of dancing you see on Dancing with the Stars and those types of shows. One weekend, I was helping out another dance teacher at a venue and met Nathaniel, who was catering. We solved a problem together and I thought, “That was so fun! I want to do this all the time.” A few months later, I was full time at Contemporary Catering and have never looked back.
What’s your role in the company?
The Fire Fighter! Special events are essentially live productions, in that each event happens only once— you don’t get another chance to make it perfect. So for our clients, this one event is everything to them. There are a lot of moving parts, and more complexity than most people imagine to execute the details to perfection. So I put out fires and keep the whole production moving forward smoothly.
